Top 10 Places to Stay Around Central Park

If you're traveling to New York and would like to explore Central Park, there's no shortage of hotels in the area. From modest and comfortable to spacious and luxurious, the Central Park area has it all.

While this list certainly doesn't include every hotel in the area, here are 10 of the most popular places to stay near Central Park:

  • 1. The Plaza Hotel: Located on 5th Ave. at the southeast corner of Central Park, The Plaza Hotel is one of New York’s most legendary buildings. The hotel opened in 1907 and has played host to some of the most famous people in the world. It recently underwent a renovation, and many of its rooms were refurbished into condos. However, the hotel still has 282 guestrooms, including 102 suites, which are all just steps away from the main entrance to Central Park.

  • 2. Park Central Hotel: The Park Central is located a couple of blocks from Central Park on 7th Ave. at 55th St. It is within walking distance not only to Central Park, but also to Times Square and Rockefeller Center.

  • 3. JW Marriott Essex House: Located at 160 Central Park South, the JW Marriott Essex House is a New York icon, as you can see the "Essex House" sign atop the hotel from many locations in Central Park. If you're traveling with Fido, you'll want to check out the Essex House, as it has a pet program that allows dogs to enjoy the lap of luxury too.

  • 4. Ritz-Carlton, Central Park: The Ritz is also located on Central Park South and provides stunning views of the Park and the New York skyline. It has 259 guestrooms, 47 of which are suites, and of course, the Ritz provides the ultimate luxurious five-star experience.

  • 5. Trump International Hotel & Tower: Located in the southwest corner of the park at Columbus Circle, the Trump International Hotel & Tower provides the experience that you'd expect with a Trump property. The 52-story building has 176 guest rooms with full kitchens, floor-to-ceiling windows and five-star everything. It also features a spa and a 55-foot heated swimming pool.

  • 6. Park Lane Hotel on Central Park: The Helmsley Park Lane is a 46-story hotel on Central Park South. It offers fantastic views of the park and is convenient to midtown locales such as Broadway.

  • 7. Mandarin Oriental: Located in Columbus Circle, the Mandarin Oriental is a sparkly new luxurious hotel that opened in 2003. It is a five-star property with 202 guest rooms and 46 suites. If you're doing business during your stay, amenities include versatile meeting spaces, a fully equipped business center, audio-visual capabilities and Internet access so you can conduct online conferences. You'll just need to figure out how to select a web conferencing services provider before you go!

  • 8. The Surrey: The Surrey is located at 20 E. 76th St. in the Upper East Side near the Metropolitan Museum of Art. As it is a little more out of the way, the Surrey provides a bit more intimate luxury experience than some of the larger hotels on Central Park South. It has 190 guest rooms and it is also available for extended stays if you'll be in New York for a while.

  • 9. Excelsior Hotel: Across the park in the Upper West Side at 45 W. 81st St., the Excelsior is right across the street from the Museum of Natural History. It is also convenient to both Lincoln Center and Columbia University. Rooms at the Excelsior are designed in the Art Deco style and are a little cozier than rooms at other Central Park hotels. However, the prices are a little bit lower too, so this is a good option if you don't want to break the bank during your stay.

  • 10. The Sherry Netherland: Located at the main entrance to Central Park on 5th Ave., the Sherry Netherland is one of New York’s historic hotels. The property opened in 1927, and it boasts classical friezes in the lobby from the mansion of Cornelius Vanderbilt. The hotel also features Harry Cipriani restaurant, which gives a 20% discount to Sherry visitors who dine there.

If you are traveling to Central Park, it pays to do your research ahead of time. Many of these hotels are pricey, but will offer discounts if you travel on certain days, go off-season or book online.
