Marriage License FAQs

Q: Do I need a marriage license?

A: In order to have an official ceremony in New York State, you will need to acquire a New York State marriage license.

Q: How do I obtain a New York State marriage license?

A: To obtain a New York State marriage license you and your partner must both go to the City Clerk’s office, in person, with proper forms of identification.

Q: When do we need to obtain our marriage license?

A: You must have your marriage license at least 24 hours prior to your ceremony. You can also obtain your license up to 60 days prior to your ceremony.

Q: When will I receive my official marriage license?

A: You will receive your official marriage license in the mail 3 to 6 weeks after your ceremony.
