Wollman Rink Opens

The 2006 ice skating season at the Wollman Rink begins Monday, Oct. 23rd, a few weeks short of the 20th anniversary of its reopening to the public.

  After a five-year rebuilding job bungled by the city resulted in a slushy rink, leaky pipes and cracked concrete, Trump took over the renovation in June 1986 and promised to wrap it up by that Thanksgiving. Trump, who did not even know how to skate, did just that, reopening on Nov. 13, 1986, with new cooling, lighting and music systems, a new skating house and a restaurant. The rink had been closed since 1980.
