Annual Central Park Bird Count
December 18, 2007
Sunday, December 16th, saw the highest bird count in Central Park in over four years. Nearly 8,000 birds were counted. These ranged from the most common, the aptly named Common Grackle to a single Peregrine Falcon. The annual bird count in Central Park dates to 1900. At that tine a group of bird enthusiassts organized an alternative to the traditional Christmas Day "side hunt," in which teams of hunters would go out and compete over who could bring in the most dead animals. The bird count, which drew dozens of people Sunday, has long been popular in New York City, according to Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe, which has usually had more bird watchers than bird shooters.
