Although the completed Central Park officially opened to the public in 1857, Central Park celebrates the birth of its creation today: July 21.

It was 157 years ago on this date, in 1853, that New York State legislators designated a large 770 acre plot of land in northern New York City as the site for the nation’s first major urban park!
