Ida the Central Park Zoo Polar Bear Dies

Ida the polar bear, a resident of the Central Park Zoo, died Friday. She was euthanized after veterinarians found she had liver disease caused by cancer. She was 25 years old. Ida is survived by Gus, her companion of 24 years and the only other polar bear at the zoo. Over their many years together, the pair was often photographed cuddling. 

According to a news release from the zoo, Ida was quite elderly for her species when she died. On average polar bears in the wild live to be around 18.
