Central Park Mall Closed Until Summer For Renovations
April 26, 2006
"One of the best kept secrets that is right under New Yorkers' noses is that Central Park is not a natural landscape," said Lane Addonizio of the Central Park Conservancy's capital projects department. "The fact is that the park is not a natural landscape and has no ability to sustain itself."Major restoration projects are needed throughout the park, Addonizio said, to prevent it from returning to its natural state of rocky swampland.
In the Mall's case, the drainage system stopped functioning and pools of water began forming after heavy rains. A lack of irrigation was causing bare patches and threatening the health of the trees, which constitute the second largest stand of American elms on the continent.
