Every year the Park offers a wide variety of theatrical and musical performances to satisfy the diverse tastes of the millions of people that visit the park every year. There is Shakespeare in the Park, the New York Public Theater's annual celebration of works by the Bard, as well as other selected works including, this year, "Romeo and Juliet" and "A Midsummer's Nights Dream". These plays are performed at the Delacorte Theater, Central Park's celebrated open air theater, which this year will also feature Joe's Pub in the Park. Then there is the Summerstage music program performed in an open air venue at Rumsey Playfield. Every year Summerstage offers an amazing array of performances, from Rufus Wainwright to Carlos Santana. There are also annual visits by the New York Philharmonic and the New York Opera for outdoor performances on the Great Lawn. And then there are the special performances, outdoor concerts by artists such as Elton John, Paul Simon and Garth Brooks
There are also any number of family activities that can be enjoyed by adults as well as children. The Central Park Zoo and the Tisch Children's Zoo offer an exciting and informative experience. View animals such as Gus the Polar Bear in specially designed habitats that provide comfortable homes for the wildlife as well as a carefully designed venue for observing them. The Children's Zoo offers interactive exhibits, such as a petting zoo, in which children can learn hands on lessons about nature and the world they share.
Central Park also has some other very special ways to enjoy your visit. In the winter you can go skating at either Wollman or Lasker Rinks. You can also get Discovery Day packs from the North Meadow Recreation Center which include a variety of sports equipment. There are basketball courts, tennis courts, handball courts and 26 ballfields on which to play Softball and Baseball.
Then there is one of the best family activities of all, just walking around the Park and discovering the beauty of the scenic landscape.
