Tisch Children's Zoo opened in 1997, financed by a generous gift from philanthropist Laurence A. Tisch. With its imaginatively designed and kid friendly exhibits the Children’s Zoo offers a magical, as well as educational, experience for children and their parents. It also offers year-round education programs, including the zoo’s fascinating Acorn Theater, which encourage visitors of all ages to become aware of the natural world that they live in and how they can help in protecting it.
Children's Zoo's collection includes: As of February 2009 you can see peacocks, storks, ruddy ducks, azure winged magpies, baikal teals, mergansers, mandarins, thrush, white cheeked pintails, plovers, guinea fowl, pheasants, doves and tragopans in the aviary. In the farm area you an see two Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs named Otis and Oliver (byt he way, visiting on National Pig Day, March 1st is always fun), African pygmy goats, five Nubian mini-goats (one just born!), a cow named Othello, two alpacas named Milo and Otis, two babydoll sheep and more.
** New at the Zoo - Come meet the new baby Nubian Mini-Goat! Born early January, 2010! See the story here!
Found in the wild: All of the birds are temperate birds and can be found in these climates all over the world.
Children's Zoo Habitat: At the center of the Children’s Zoo is the Enchanted Forest which is a covered aviary. A net stretches overhead in the aviary section and enables toddlers to witness a wonderful collection of birds fluttering around them including Crested Doves, Hooded Mergansers, Mandarin Ducks, two storks, two peacocks and more. Outside the aviary is another fun place where giant insects hover overhead and a larger than life sized spider web offers a chance to exhibit developing climbing skills. Visitors can purchase a handful of food that the farm animals are only too happy to nibble out of your hand. The domestic animals available for petting include alpacas, goats, sheep, a cow and two Vietnamese pot-bellied pig. Small bronze sculptures of the residents are present at the front of each animal enclosure and when a child touches one of them it squeaks or moos the appropriate greeting.
What do they eat: CPZ's birds have feeding pans throughout the aviary. Watch these food places and get an even better look at some of the birds.
