Doves and Pigeons
Nicobar pigeon (Caloenas nicobarica)

Where found : On small islands or islets in southeastern Asia, particularly from Nicobar Island to New Guinea and north to the Philippines. In the Tropic building, these birds may be found perched above the stairs descending from the Mezzanine level or just inside the entrance to the building on the left-hand side.
Diet : Seeds, berries, and insects. These birds feed on the ground. At the Central Park Zoo, these beautiful birds are fed avian pellets, seed mix, and bird salad.
Life span : 7 years in the wild and up to 20 years in captivity.
Description : This is one of the larger pigeons, but has the same thick body and small head common to this group of birds. The general coloration is a shiny, dark green with a short white tail. The neck plumage is long and green with copper and blue-green overtones. The bill is black and it has red legs.
Sulawesi ground-dove (Gallicolumba tristigmata) AKA Yellow-breasted ground-dove
Where found : Lowland forests of mainland Sulawesi, Indonesia. However, they may also be found in altitudes up to 6,000 feet above sea level.
Diet : These ground-dwelling birds forage for seeds, fallen fruits, and berries. Additionally, they may eat insects. At the Central Park Zoo, these doves are fed avian pellets, bird salad, and seeds.
Life span : Approximately 13–14 inches.
Description : The upper parts of this dove are brown with some feathers of green, turquoise, and purple. The chin and throat are pale gray, shading into darker gray on the breast and belly. They have a distinctive yellow mark on the forehead and the chest. The females are commonly duller in color.
Victoria-crowned pigeon (Goura victoria)
Where found : Forested lowlands and marshy areas of northern New Guinea and the Jobi and Biak islands off the coast.
Diet : Fruit (especially wild figs) and grasses.
Length : Up to 24 inches.
Description : Males and females may grow to the size of large chicken. These grayish-blue birds have some purplish and red markings and a crested crown of feathers, which are tipped with white. They have a long tail that sweeps the ground. They have a small head like other pigeons, and red eyes. Their beak is long and hooked.
