Fairy bluebird (Irena puella)

Where found: Moist, evergreen forests and the deep jungle of southwestern India through Myanmar and Indonesia. Look up in the trees at the CPZ Tropic building…you never know if one might be perched above you. They tend to be rather active so keep your cameras ready.
Diet: Fruit (especially figs), nectar, and insects.
Length: Adults may reach up to 11 inches.
Description: Males have a dazzling bluish-purple coloring with lustrous black under parts. As tends to happen among birds, the females are a duller color- in this case a muted blue-green.
Emerald starling (Lamprotornis iris)
Where found: West Africa, specifically French Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Ivory Coast. These splendid birds prefer grassland or open woodland.
Diet: Small fruits, seeds, and insects (ants and caterpillars).
Length: Up to 7.5 inches.
Description: These birds have glossy emerald green feathers accented with purple near the ear opening, neck, and belly. The under parts are brown.
Life span: Up to 14 years in captivity.

Emerald toucanet (Aulachorynchus prasinus)
Where found: Southern Mexico south through to Southern Peru. These birds tend to stay near mountainous regions.
Diet: Fruit, insects
Length: Up to 12 inches, 3 inches of which are the beak.
Description: These smaller versions of the larger toucans may weigh up to 175 grams and are mostly green, with the distinctive large beak. Beak color may vary.
