Golden-breasted starling (Cosmopsarus regius) AKA Royal starling
|
Where found: These gorgeous birds may be found at the top of trees in the dry bush of northeastern Africa. At the Central Park Zoo, they may be found perched in many places, especially in the treetops above the tortoises and in the bush just upstairs on the Mezzanine level.
Diet: These birds feed mostly on insects, such as termites, in addition to some small vertebrates (snails, spiders, and crabs).
Length: Adults may grow up to 12—15 inches.
Description: Males and females have a green head with a shiny blue tail and back. They have blue-violet wings with a yellow breast, belly, and upper tail. The tails are long and the white around their eyes is outstanding among the dark green head.
Japanese white-eye (Zosterops Japonica)
Where found: In the mangroves and mountain scrub forests of Japan and the big island of Hawaii. At the Central Park Zoo, these small birds blend well into the trees and are very hard to spot. But if you are patient, it is worth the wait.
Diet: Insects, fruits, and nectar.
Length: Males up to 4—5.5 inches. Females tend to be slightly smaller.
Description: In males and females the upper body is dull green. The under parts are yellow and gray. They are named for the white ring of feathers around their eyes. These birds mate for life.
