Auxiliary Police Program

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BEING AN AUXILIARY POLICE OFFICER?

1. Being apart of one of the most prestigious Auxiliary Police Units in the NYPD.
2. This opportunity provides excellent opportunity to learn how to communicate with the community. Since Auxiliary Police Officers patrol in uniform (and in pairs), they share in maintaining the integrity of The Police Department and help strengthen community bonds.
3. The satisfaction of helping the Central Park Community (Police Department, Park Conservancy, Park's Enforcement, New York Road Runners, ASPCA, and the hundreds of people who use the park each day ). You may also attend Central Park Community meetings. In addition, this is A GREAT EXPOSURE to a law enforcement environment, for those of you who are thinking of police work as a career path (i.e. NYPD, Federal Law Enforcement, etc.). The unit has close bonds the regular cops in the precinct who are in turn grateful to have the help of Auxiliary Police Officers. Although it should be mentioned that MOST of DO NOT have interest in pursuing law enforcement careers, so IT IS an awesome opportunity for those who are NOT considering police work.
4. This looks great on your resume. For example under a "Community Service" heading, even if you don't wish to be a cop. Our unit instills good leadership skills. It does stand out! (for those of you applying to Business School/Law School/Med school/ Career seekers, shifters and so on).
5. Opportunities for promotion to Sergeant, Lieutenant and more.
6. Allows you to develop preparedness and observation skills for emergency situations, especially in today’s post 9/11 world. It should be noted that Auxiliary Police Officers during the 9/11 incident were, for a time, the only police presence in the park, and during the blackout APO's assisted relieved regulars police officers so that more of them would be available to deal with pressing police situations at the time.
7. Being an Auxiliary Police Officer in Central Park is a fine way to learn the geography of Central Park! The park is a great place with many faces. Its diverse terrain appears different, depending on season or even time of day.
The Central Park Precinct is UNLIKE any other precinct in New York City. It is the SAFEST Police Precinct in the NYPD. There are no residents. It receives thousands of visitors every day from around the world, many of whom will ask to take a photo with you!!
8. Allows you to part of a great community and meet many new people (see above).
9. Allows you to be apart of the greatest and most famous Police Department in the world.

Being apart of the NYPD, is like "having front row tickets to the greatest show on earth!!!! "

SO WHAT DOES THE NYPD REQUIRE OF YOU??

NYPD REQUIRES:

1. You are a U.S. citizen or Permanant Resident (Green Card).
2. LIVE OR WORK in New York City (i.e. Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, Bronx, Staten Island.)
3. Be of Good Moral Character. This includes having not been arrested and/or convicted of a felony (you MUST submit to a FBI and NYPD finger print background check)!!
4. Over the age of 18.
5. Good Health
6. Physically Fit
7. Read and write English.

WHAT DOES THE CENTRAL PARK PRECINCT AUXILIARY POLICE UNIT REQUIRE OF YOU?

1. *****Willingness to commit to 4-5 hour tour ONE NIGHT A WEEK. from about 7pm-10pm (weekend tours are available). *****
2. Understand that the NYPD Auxiliary Police is a paramilitary organization. That means that like the regular police force, we have a hierarchy (Auxiliary Police Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, Deputy Inspector).
