Winners of the 2008 Photo Contest
After careful deliberation our panel of judges has determined the winners of CentralPark.com's Spring 2008 Photo Contest! Picking the three best pictures out of the thirty top photos proved to be a very difficult task - so much so that third place resulted in a three way tie. We would like to once again thank everyone who participated and encourage you to enter our upcoming Fall Photo contest. Remember – first prize is a stay at the world famous Jumeirah Essex House Hotel on Central Park South. Click here for a list of all the prizes.

First prize for our spring contest goes to Joe Josephs for his photograph entitled “Bent Tree Reflection”. It is a subtly framed picture of a tree reflected in the Pool at 102nd St. on the west side of the park. Mr. Josephs says the park inspires his efforts in two ways - first to creatively document Central Park's almost limitless photographic possibilities and second to emulate the designers' (landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted and architect Calvert Vaux) desire and drive to achieve something unique and beautiful. We would have to say that he has succeeded on both counts.

Kevin McCullough has captured second prize for his beautiful photograph of a stairway leading down to the lake from Cherry Hill. It is titled simply “Central Park Path” and depicts in subtle detail the more rustic nature of this corner of the park near the southern end of the Lake. Kevin counts Central Park as his backyard and travels through it almost everyday. In this case familiarity has certainly bred anything but contempt, as this insightful study in black and white photography demonstrates. |

Our first third place award goes to Stephanie Luke for her picture “Along the Reservoir”. Her sun dappled study of a path strewn with cherry blossoms so vividly evokes springtime in Central Park you can almost feel the soft breeze swirling the petals around you. Stephanie took her photo while visiting the city this past spring, but describes Central Park as easily the best part of the city – “It is truly an oasis for the body and soul, the living center of a great metropolis.” Stephanie, we couldn't have said it better ourselves, thank you for sharing your vision. |

Our next third place winner is the photo “A Strange Flower Blooming in the Spring” submitted by Marjorie Smith. She has only begun taking photography seriously and her efforts have paid off in a wonderfully playful picture of a grinning golden retriever raising his head above the blossoms near the Obelisk. Marjorie's favorite part of the park is the Reservoir and she enjoys watching the sun set over the western shore. We hope she will continue her photographic pursuits and be sure to share the results with our members. |

“Tulips” is the title and subject of our final third prize winner. It was photographed by Karen Buchar. It is a simple, yet breathtakingly vibrant photo that captured the vivid hues of some the park's loveliest spring blossoms. The Zoo is Karen's favorite part of the park and on this day she was on a mission to photograph Gus the Polar Bear. However the crowds were so formidable that she wandered farther into the park instead and took this picture while strolling near the Carousel. Gus may not have gotten his close-up, but we've been treated to a lovely image of the park in spring. |
Once again we would like to thank everyone that took time to enter the contest and to rate the photos. We also look forward to the coming season and another collection of amazing pictures of Central Park.
