Diana Edkins joined Aperture in October 2002 as Traveling Exhibitions Coordinator and was appointed Director of Special Projects in March 2003.
In spring 2005 she became the Director of Exhibitions and Limited Edition Prints. During her tenure at Aperture she has curated numerous exhibitions i.e. William Christenberry Photographs and most recently co-curated with Larry Fink Lisette Model and her Successors. Ms. Edkins has been seriously and actively involved with fine art photography since 1969. Her first book was done with Beaumont Newhall on William Henry Jackson for the Amon Carter Museum. She worked at LIGHT Gallery at its inception, and was a research supervisor under John Szarkowski at The Department of Photography, Museum of Modern Art from 1972-1976. She has taught the History of Photography at Cooper Union, Pratt Institute, School of Visual Arts, and The New School, and has lectured extensively, curated over 15 exhibitions, and written numerous articles including an article on Henri Cartier Bresson for Vogue in 1979.
In 1977, Ms. Edkins joined Condé Nast Publications as a temporary worker to organize their collection of photographs from Vanity Fair, Vogue, and House & Garden. She created the Conde Nast archive. The organization of the archive enabled Condé Nast to feed not only its own US magazines but also its own worldwide magazines with images of cultural significance. During this time she also edited and co-authored several books from the collection namely, Fashion Photography (1979); Vanity Fair: Photographs of An Age (1981); On The Edge: The First One Hundred Years of Vogue (1990) and others. On her own, Ms. Edkins has co-authored many "crossover books" using photography – the most known being The Power of Style (published 1992 and still in print); Vanites; Animal Attractions; .Leg; People and Pearls; The Magic Endures; The Power of Pride: The Stylemakers and Rulebreakers of the Harlem Renaissance and The Blue Jean.
