The world famous Apollo Theater is more than a historic landmark - it is a source of pride and a symbol of the brilliance of American artistic accomplishment. With its rich past and continued significance, the Apollo Theater is considered a bastion of African-American culture and achievement, and a fascinating chronicle in American history.
In February, the Apollo Theater continues to celebrate its 75th Anniversary by bringing some of its magic to Central Park: historian Billy Mitchell will illuminate the story of the Apollo, from its construction in 1914; to the 1934 advent of Amateur Night the theater's weekly talent contest; to the many legends that have performed on its stage, to its role in Harlem today. This rich interpretation will be followed by a musical performance by an Amateur Night Winner!
