Claremont Riding Academy Closing
April 25, 2007
The Claremont Riding Academy on 89th St. is the oldest continuously-operated stable in the country, but decreasing ridership and increasing development on the Upper West Side is forcing it to close. Sunday, April 29th, will be the last time riders can rent horses from 115 year old stable to take on Central Park's bridal path."It's like a death in the family. This is a unique community, and it is not easily or ever replaceable,” said Claremont Riding Academy’s Judith Martin. “Most major cities that have riding in the parks no longer do, so we are a long, long holdout, but it's just sad."
The 89th Street stable was built in 1892 and has been recognized as a national landmark.
