Radcliffe and Lel Win Marathon

November 05, 2007

Holding off close competitors in both of their respective fields of the ING New York City Marathon Paula Radcliffe and Martin Lel came in first in the Women's and Men's division respectively.

Paula Radcliffe won her first marathon in two years.  The world record holder held off Ethiopian rival Gete Wami to clinch her second New York marathon title.

Kenya's Martin Lel - who also won the event in 2003 - outkicked Morocco's Abderrahim Goumri on the final incline to the Central Park finish line to win in 2:09:04: 12 seconds ahead of Goumri.

The marathon, boasting the largest field in the sport with more than 38,000 runners, was staged in conjunction with the yesterday's U.S. Olympic Team trials in Central Park in which one runner died.

Ryan Shay, a four-time national distance-running champion, died Saturday morning after collapsing near the 5-mile mark. The 28-year-old Shay was given cardiopulmonary resuscitation during the men's 26.2-mile (42.2-kilometer) trials before being transported to Lenox Hill Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:46 a.m., USA Track and Field said in a statement.
