Gates Documentary Unfurled

Thursday night, January 17th, admirers of the Christo and Jeanne-Claude filled an auditorium at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art for the premiere of an HBO documentary about their latest piece, "The Gates." For that project, which was displayed in Central Park in February 2005, the artists erected 7,503 16-foot gates and unfurled from them long panels of fabric in a brilliant shade of orange.The couple first sought official permission for the project in 1979, and the 98-minute documentary, to air on the cable channel beginning Feb. 26, records all of the efforts of the artists during the intervening years to realize their vision.
