New 50,000 Person Limit for Events on the Great Lawn.

Legendary Central Park Performances - Paul Simon on the lawn in 1991, drawing half a million people, Luciano Pavarotti singing opera to a crowd almost as large and Pope John Paul II celebrating Mass on the lawn in 1995 before 125,000 faithful - are now a thing of the past.  The Parks Dept.'s new 50,000 person limit on events taking place on the Great Lawn went into effect Friday Dec. 30th and from now on the largest concerts will be the Metropolitan Opera and Philharmonic performances during the summer.  The reason for the limit is the extreme stress caused to the lawn by huge throngs of people.
