Chess and checkers can be played in many New York City parks, but only at Central Park’s Chess & Checkers House can visitors borrow game pieces for free. Dominoes and backgammon sets are also available on site.
Surrounding the octagonal brick structure are 24 shaded tables, perfect for a game any time of year. If you don’t have a partner, park staff can often help connect you with other players.
Originally built in 1952 atop the historic Kinderberg, once the park's largest rustic structure, the Chess & Checkers House was fully restored in June 2023. Improvements include an accessible ramp, renovated restrooms, restored trellis and tables, and upgraded interiors.
Located just southwest of the Dairy, players from novices to seasoned experts are welcome daily.
