Armand Hammer & The Alchemist- SummerStage

Rap duo, Armand Hammer along with collaborators from Haram perform live for SummerStage 2021.

The New York City rap scene has never been more exciting, bursting with a diverse array of talent building on the form while pushing its boundaries. Armand Hammer, the duo of Elucid and Billy Woods, is a prime example. Their latest LP with master beatsmith the Alchemist, Haram, drapes a cloak of darkness over postcolonial wounds, with a cleverness typically reserved for wry comedians. They’re joined by a collection of close friends and collaborators, almost all of which appear on Haram: Philadelphia’s experimental visionary Moor Mother, who collaborated with woods on their BRASS LP, and both KAYANA and Fielded, two nascent producer/singers helping shape the new sound of R&B.

The Alchemist’s hypnotic loops give this record a more subdued texture than a typical Armand Hammer album. A master of mood, the producer paints an abstract noir with morose piano samples and plodding bass lines.
