Please subscribe to our newsletter to get up-to-date information for the Mulchfest 2024 event when the details are announced, or check back later.
Beginning December 26th, the NYC Parks Department along with the NYC Department of Sanitation will take your bare naked Christmas tree and recycle it for mulch. Here's what you need to know:
When does Mulchfest take place?
Tree drop-off begins on December 26th, 2022 and continues through January 8th, 2023. Drop off your tree during Park hours. Chipping weekend takes place on Saturday and Sunday, January 7th and 8th from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
Where are the locations?
There are three locations in Central Park for residents:
- East 106th Street and Fifth Avenue - drop-off only
- West 65th Street and Central Park West - drop-off only
- West 81st Street and Central Park West, at the bridle path - chipping location
How can I get a bag of mulch?
You'll need to bring your tree to the Bridle Path at West 81st Street and Central Park West on chipping weekend only. (Dates and times listed above)
What else goes on during chipping weekend?
It's a fun and friendly event! Meet other recyclers and you can even get a family photo. Use #mulchfest to share your experience.
Can I volunteer to help?
You sure can! You can help spread mulch from Mulchfest around city trees with the Stewardship Team. Register here to volunteer.
What else should I know?
Trees must be clean of all ornamentation. Strip your masterpiece bare and remove all traces of lights, ornaments, netting, tinsel, etc.
What if I can't muster the energy to haul my tree to a drop-off site?
For those of you who can't make it to a Mulchfest location, the Sanitation Department says that Christmas tree pick-up will run from January 6th through January 15th, "barring any delays that may be caused by snow events." The same rules apply for leaving your tree curbside - no decorations. And no plastic bags, etc. The approximately 200,000 trees picked up from curbside will be recycled and used for mulch as well. Happy days!
Additional locations:
If Central Park is not convenient for you, there are 74 drop-off points to choose from.
