NBCNewYork.Com and the Associated Press, reported on the 11th anniversary of Jean-Claude and Christo "The Gates, Central Park, New York City, 1979-2005," which opened Feb. 12 and ran through Feb. 27, 2005.
School groups, tourists from across the country and local New Yorkers came to see the The Gates. The Gates required that no holes would be drilled into the ground or tree branches trimmed. When it was taken down the piece left no trace.
Jean-Claude and Christo, set up 7,503 frames each with orange-tinted fabric through 23 miles of the park. They called it "a visual golden river." The thousands of tons of steel, orange plastic and saffron-colored nylon fabric were to be recycled as everything from paint rollers and steel reinforcing bar to PVC pipe.
