July 10th, 2026 - Central Park hosts a new chapter of 9/11 remembrance this Saturday, as 5,000 runners take on a four-mile course honoring the 2,977 people killed in the September 11, 2001 attacks. The race starts at 7:30 AM on East Drive near East 69th Street and finishes on the 72nd Street Transverse.
It's the first time the National September 11 Memorial & Museum has teamed up with New York Road Runners to produce its annual tribute run. The event previously took the form of a 5K in Lower Manhattan each April, tracing a route inspired by the paths recovery workers walked after the attacks. This year's race also counts toward NYRR's 9+1 qualifying program for the 2027 TCS New York City Marathon.
Proceeds support the memorial's free outdoor space and its national education programs, with organizers aiming to raise $800,000. Runners include a retired EMT who worked at Ground Zero, an Air Force pilot who survived the Pentagon attack as a toddler, and a Queens woman honoring her father, an AT&T worker who died of 9/11-related cancer after helping restore communications downtown.
Registration has closed, but spectators are welcome along the course.
