Feb 27th, 2024 - In the wake of the death of Flaco, State Senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal has announced that the Bird Safe Buildings Act will now be called the FLACO Act (Feathered Lives Also Count), “to honor the [positive effect] Flaco had on New York City.”
The law aims to help stop preventable window collision strikes and would require bird-friendly designs to be incorporated, particularly in windows, at any new or significantly altered state-owned or leased buildings.
Nearly a quarter of a million birds in NYC and hundreds of millions of birds across the country die annually from crashes into buildings. By passing the FLACO act the hope is to bring this number down.
