Hundreds of birders from across the globe are about to descend on Central Park for peak birding season. This year's migration has been delayed by unseasonably cool weather and northerly winds, but should occur within the next two weeks.
Many of the species bird enthusiasts seek out for their beauty and rarity migrate as far south as South America in winter and are about to return to breed as far north as the arctic circle. Their migration patterns will repeat in the fall, but they are more easily observed in spring audibly and visually: males display their breeding plumage and they sing.
Warblers, vireos, orioles and tanager are some of the more sights for birders - who generally keep records of the birds they've seen and heard. The website eBird is increasingly common amongst bird lovers, helping them maintain their lists and providing them with real-time reports on their sightings.
