This week Central Park Drive was renamed after former mayor John Lindsay - the man responsible for closing it off to traffic for the safety and enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists. Lindsay first closed the drive, which runs from East 72nd Street to west 72nd Street, only on weekends in the summer of 1966. The plan was so well received by the public that the city expanded it to a year-round closing a year later.
On Monday the city and the Central Park Conservancy honored his contribution to the park experience by renaming the lower loop of the road "John V. Lindsay Drive." The dedication ceremony took place at Central Park Drive and West 67th Street and included former Lindsay officials Jay Kriegal and Sid Davidoff, Parks Commissioner Veronica M. White, and Lindsay's daughters Kathy Lake and Margi Picotte.
