June 26th, 2025 - The Central Park Conservancy is redesigning the park’s historic 6.1-mile drives, the first major update in a generation, to better separate pedestrians, cyclists, and other users.
Since the park went mostly car-free in 2018, increasing bike and foot traffic has caused congestion and safety concerns. The redesign includes new lane markings, wider pedestrian paths, improved crosswalks, and updated signals, based on a detailed study, extensive research and community input.
Work began in 2025 with phased construction to minimize disruption. The goal is to enhance safety and mobility while still accommodating park visitors.
