Shinnyo-en, the Buddhist organization responsible for Lantern Floating Hawaii - one of the largest Memorial Day events in the country with 40,000 visitors - will hold New York's first Lantern Floating for Peace in Central Park on September 22. The date was chosen as it is the day before the United Nations General Assembly. The organization hopes to unite thousands of New Yorkers and international visitors by inviting them to participate in this symbolic tradition, honoring the dead and signifying hopes for harmony and peace, by personally dedicating lanterns.
The event will be held throughout the day, free of charge, at Trump Rink. It will culminate with a closing ceremony at dusk featuring musical performances, ceremonial elements and a communal floating of lanterns presided over by Her Holiness Shinso Ito - the Head Priest of Shinnyo-en.
