March 6, 2025 - Central Park is set to become more spacious and safer for visitors with a new redesign plan. The initiative, led by multiple city agencies and a private organization, focuses on enhancing the six-mile loop within the park. This effort aims to address the growing need for better separation between pedestrians, joggers, and cyclists, particularly with the rise of e-vehicles.
The project involves repaving and reconfiguring the park's drives to allocate space more effectively. An inner lane will be designated for pedestrians, while cyclists and faster e-bikers will have their own designated areas. This redesign also includes improved traffic signals to guide cyclists and direct pedestrians to safer crossing points.
Construction begins March 17th and will be completed in phases, with the southern section being addressed first. The work is expected to take about six weeks, weather permitting, and will occur during nighttime hours to minimize disruptions.
