Los Angeles and New York City are putting their rivalries aside and pooling resources to provide enhanced offerings to audiences of the Central Park and Santa Monica Pier summer concerts. This joint venture comes after the 28 years the City Parks Foundation has been producing Central Park’s SummerStage, and the 29 years of Santa Monica Pier Corp’s Twilight Concert Series. The idea came, in part, from budgetary constraints - both institutions are non-profits and receive no ticket revenues. They have more influence in going after artists, partners and sponsers as a team.
The partnership is also part of a larger rebranding project being undertaken by Santa Monica Pier in preparation for the new EXPO line, which will connect downtown Los Angeles with Santa Monica’s Pier and beaches within the next two years. The rebranding will also include pertnerships with FILM INDEPENDENT for film programming, the founder of The Echo and the promoter of the Hollywood Bowl for music, Cars+Machine Project for arts projects, Joel Brand for active lifestyle curration and Heal the Bay for educational programming.
The musical line-up for the upcoming season was previewed last week in New York at the Highline Ballroom for an audience of mostly talent agents, artist managers and producers. The upcoming season will include funk icon Shuggie Otis, DJ Kool Herc, and a bevy of new talent including Brooklyn’s People Get Ready, Ofei, and Joshua Nelson.
