Since superstorm Sandy forced the cancellation of the New York City Marathon, would-be marathoners have been anxious to seek other events into which they can parlay their training. On the originally scheduled date of the marathon, Central Park was filled by thousands of runners. While some have signed up for marathons in Philadelphia or beyond, others prefer to stay in the New York, causing registration for some of the vast array of new running events that have started in the last few years in the New York area to near capacity.
One of the events is a marathon to be held in Central Park in the winter of 2013 hosted by NYC Runs. It’s founder, Steve Lastoe, has reported the event is close to selling out its 500 spots only three weeks after it was announced, and without a confirmed date.
Mr. Lastoe is working with the Central Park Conservancy on the details of the new marathon and determining whether participation could be increased to 1,500.
