February 18, 2025 - The Central Park Conservancy is launching an initiative to commemorate Seneca Village, a historic African American community that once existed in the area now occupied by Central Park.
To mark the 200th anniversary of Seneca Village's founding in 1825, the Conservancy will host a series of free public programs over the next few years. These events aim to raise awareness about Seneca Village's history and foster dialogue on its significance.
The first event takes place on March 13 at the Schomburg Center in Harlem, and the series will ultimately lead to a community-driven plan for permanently honoring Seneca Village within Central Park.
