April 20, 2023 - The NYC Dept of Transportation (DOT) announced it has installed 12 AI sensors on lampposts spread throughout the city to track how pedestrians, vehicles, bikes, and other modes of transportation move and intersect with each other in an effort to improve safety.
The sensors will record anonymous data and DOT plans to publish the data on the City’s open data portal.
One of the sensors is near the southwest entrance to Central Park at Columbus Circle. On any given day, there is a steady stream of runners, walkers, cyclists, e-bikes, scooters, pedicabs, and horse-drawn carriages passing through the intersection.
