Jan 15, 2023 - Born Fischel Lebowitz to a large Orthodox family, Lebow grew up in Romania, during the Nazi occupation. Along with one of his brothers, he fled and eventually landed in the U.S., New York to be exact, working in the garment industry.
An avid tennis player, he was challenged to a 1.6-mile run around the Central Park reservoir and he quickly became consumed with the sport. Lebow went on to join the New York Road Runners, an organization he would eventually oversee for two decades bringing the sport of running to a much wider audience.
Fred Lebow is co-founder of the world famous NYC Marathon.
