Aug 20th, 2025 - Central Park’s “Furever Tree,” an 18-foot Hinoki false cypress hidden in the Ramble, has been cut down after more than 40 years as an unofficial pet memorial.
Each holiday season, New Yorkers hung photos, ornaments, and notes honoring lost pets on its branches. The tree declined due to environmental stress—drought, harsh winters, soil compaction—and possibly harm from pet ashes scattered at its roots, which are toxic to the tree.
Volunteers who tended the tree for years are now exploring ways to keep the tradition alive. The Central Park Conservancy is committed to finding a sustainable alternative to honor pets without damaging the park’s landscape. Until then, the city bids farewell to one of its sweetest, most private holiday traditions.
