Something good has come from Sandy. Inspired by the power outages that made it difficult for New Yorkers to charge their phones to get in touch with friends and loved ones, AT&T has created and completely funded a pilot program in which they have erected 25 solar-powered cell phone charging stations in parks and beaches across the boroughs. One of the first stations to appear is at SummerStage in Central Park.
Solar power manufacturer Goal Zero and Brooklyn design company Pensa have partnered to create the "Street Charge" stations that can charge up to six mobile devices or tablets at a time. Three of the six USB ports are naked holes, one Lightning, one 30-pin dock and one micro USB. If the pilot program is deemed successful, the structures may be made permanent.
