The 10 members of Troop 3484 plan to donate $1,920 from their cookie sales to a fund dedicated to building statues of the women in Central Park. The sum symbolically matches the year the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote, was ratified.
The fifth-graders learned Central Park is home to 23 statues or busts of men — but none of real women — during a field trip over the summer. When school resumed, they started making signs and chanting.
So far, The Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony Statue Fund has collected $150,000.
New York Life Insurance has pledged to match up to $500,000 in donations.
