May 17th, 2023 - Pale Male, the renowned red-tailed hawk who captivated New York City for three decades, has passed away. The hawk, who gained fame through media coverage, books, and a documentary, made his home on a luxury Manhattan building. In 2004, Pale Male faced eviction, which caused an uproar and eventually led to the successful reinstallation of his nest.
With his visible presence, he became an ambassador for urban wildlife, drawing crowds of spectators. Recently, a sick red-tailed hawk found in Central Park was believed to be Pale Male, and despite efforts to save him, he did not survive.
While his age surpasses the average life span of red-tailed hawks, experts suspect it was indeed Pale Male based on collected evidence. His legacy lives on, as he leaves behind a lasting impact on New York City's birding community.
