The New York Times is reporting that SummerStage, the free concert series presented each year by the City Parks Foundation, will place an emphasis on jazz in its coming season. There will be a higher ratio of jazz performances, including a free concert by the tenor saxophonist Kamasi Washington on June 18 in Central Park.
“For the last couple of years we’ve been identifying a theme, something that’s relevant to New York City,” said Heather Lubov, the executive director of the City Parks Foundation. “This year, given what seems to be a resurgence of the music particularly with younger jazz artists, it made sense to infuse jazz throughout our festival.”
Jazz has been a core part of SummerStage since the beginning. The first SummerStage concert, at Central Park’s Naumberg Bandshell in 1986, featured the Sun Ra Arkestra. City Parks Foundation will announce in April at summerstage.org the majority of the acts to appear this season.
