Apr 16th, 2024 - The Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) celebrated 50 years of scenic landmarks in New York City today.
The Landmarks Law, established in 1965, initially did not cover the scenic landmark category. It wasn't until December 1973 that an amendment was passed to allow the designation of city-owned public open spaces and other landscape features as scenic landmarks.
Following this amendment, Central Park became the first official scenic landmark, on April 16, 1974.
