With the intention of raising awareness about mental illness, Simon Whitehouse ran nearly 100 miles from New York City to Philadelphia this weekend. His path began Saturday morning at Central Park and culminated Sunday afternoon with a run up Philadelphia's Art Museum steps as Sylvester Stallone did in the film 'Rocky'. The journey, which Whitehouse dubbed "Simon's Rocky Road" was a tribute to his brother, Stephen, who has suffered from schizophrenia since a mental breakdown 20 years ago. Since the British brothers were boys they dreamed of being 'Rocky Balboa' and running up the Art Museum steps.
Whitehouse ran half his race during the day and the other half at night to reflect his brother's life. "You know he was a perfectly capable, young adult, full of potential," Whitehouse said, "but in the second half it has been very dark with a lot of pain and a lot of suffering." His brother turned 40 on Sunday.
Due to fatigue, Whitehouse finished the last 20 miles on a bike.
