As everyone knows, whether you are a walker or a runner, the surface of the track that wraps around the reservoir offered its own hazards. The track was often proned to flooding, with deep puddles and a very uneven and slippery surface in inclement weather. After a year of renovations and restorations, the track had an official re-opening this past Wednesday. The track has been renamed the Stephanie and Fred Shuman Running Track.
Renovations included new concrete curbs along its outer portion and an inner metal edge to help sustain the surface, which often gets washed or kicked away. The track was re-paved with the same crushed stone that had currently been used along the 1.58-mile stretch. New signage has been posted around the track, including 'where you are' markers, and reminders that whether you walk or run the track, it is always done in a counter-clockwise manner. Remember no dogs or strollers are allowed on the track.
The running track has appeared in many movies, including: Hannah and Her Sisters, Marathon Man, Devil's Advocate and Sex in the City to name a few.
