runnersworld.com, reported that Mary Wittenberg, who was the CEO of New York Road Runners and race director of the New York City Marathon for nine years, worked at a water stop near mile 22 in today TCS Marathon, that was held in New York City.
For the first time in 17 years, Mary Wittenberg, who became the race director of the NYC Marathon in 2005, was not at the finish line to welcome 50,000 runners to Central Park. Instead, in blue rubber gloves, she was handing out water to those runners at an aid station in Harlem next to her husband and two sons.
She didn't know if she could handle being at the Marathon, and contemplated being out of NYC. Instead, she decided to volunteer. She picked mile 22 to honor Jim Murray, a 38-year volunteer who served as the captain of the same water station and passed away last November. The mile markers on the side of the road bear his name.
