Paralympian Ryan Chambers set off on an ambitious and grueling 3,400 mile wheelchair bound trek cross country. Chambers, who was born with spina bifida and has been competing in wheelchair races since he was eight, set off from the Staples Center in Los Angeles and expects to travel 60 miles a day, ending in Central Park in 71 days.
The journey is both a personal goal for him, as well as a way to raise money and awareness for Stay Focused, his non-profit organization that certifies teens and young adults with disabilities in scuba diving.
"People in a wheelchair are always in a seated position," Chambers said. "When you go into the water, you're able to stretch out. Your legs will come out from underneath you and it's very, very good physically."
If his race goes as planned, Chambers should arrive in Central Park on June 15.
