WTTW Chicago and PBS have produced a must-see three-part television and web series, 10 That Changed America, which is narrated by Geoffrey Baer and premieres Tuesday, April 12, 2016, at 8:00 pm ET (check local listings) on PBS. On the second episode of the new three-part series, they explore the visionaries who parsed out some land inside city borders that are transformed into serene escapes from everyday urban life.
One of the ten parks they visit is Central Park. They report how in 1858, Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux won a competition to design Central Park for tenement dwellers to the 1%ers, an egalitarian use of land that required no status in society to enjoy.
The three part series reports that every city in the USA has a wholly unique and special chunk of land – a town square, a park, a riverwalk or industrial space-turned-meeting space that you can explore and learn quite a bit about our history as a country. There will be a total of 40 segments that explore America’s man-made must visit destinations. To read the article in its entirety as well as to see what other parks made the top 10, click here.
