Oct 15th, 2026 - The Plaza Hotel, at 5th Avenue and 59th Street, is scheduled to cease operating in January 2027 while its facade is repaired. The work is expected to take roughly four years, with a reopening in 2031 if construction stays on schedule.
NBC New York reports that the effect on weddings at the hotel is not yet clear. Residents of the building's apartments will not have to move out. Close to 400 hotel employees may go unpaid while the hotel is closed.
Department of Buildings schematics obtained by NBC New York indicate the city considers the facade unsafe, and the department says photographs show unsafe conditions. Under new city rules, $6,000 monthly fines could start in January.
A hotel spokesperson said the repairs call for "careful consideration" of preservation requirements, plus long-term care for the building. Councilwoman Virginia Maloney said she has heard that no more than two companies can supply the materials the facade needs.
