The New York Times reported on the many minor mysteries of NYC which included the Alice in Wonderland Statue in Central Park. Is that the March Hare or the White Rabbit in Central Park? Was New York established in 1625 or 1664? The article highlights these two mysteries.
The parks department website describes the figure in the Alice statue as the Mad Hatter, and the Cheshire cat as the March Hare. Central Park Conservancy website says it is the White Rabbit, but the Whoopi Goldberg audio recording for the statue says it is the March Hare.
It turns out in 1959 when the statue was about to be dedicated, the parks department said it was the March Hare, but the brochure that was printed and distributed at the unveiling ceremony said it was the White Rabbit. You can tell becuase of the watch in his hand. The widow of the creater of the sculpture confirms that it is the White Rabbit.
