June 30th, 2025 - In an after-dark encounter in Central Park, photographers David Lei and Jacqueline Emery documented the park’s only resident coyotes, a bonded pair named Romeo and Juliet.
Once removed from the park, coyotes are now protected under NYC’s WildlifeNYC program, helping control rodents and geese. Despite occasional public concern, the coyotes pose little threat and have not harmed people or pets.
Romeo and Juliet have yet to successfully raise pups, likely due to disturbances. Visitors are urged to respect the coyotes’ space and keep dogs leashed to maintain safety and harmony.
